2 Timothy 4:3-5: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” The “itching ears” syndrome. Sounds good like it buy it! they don’t know truth so when the hear something that sounds good they want to buy the CD! let me say something truth cannot be changed and the church cannot be reinvented, upgraded or modified. If you want to know how its done, what you supposed to believe, and what to preach about, look at Acts. The apostles doctrine (Acts 2:42) It contains all that Jesus taught (Acts 1:1) and all the prophets spoke about. If a man cannot adhere to the apostles doctrine then he aught not to plant a church or be a minister of Jesus church. He should learn until he knows the revelation of the one true God and his name then if God calls him to work for him. Maybe the Lord will employ him as a servant. (Rom 1:1)
How do we know if something is sound? We have a measuring rod with which to measure it We have a blueprint to which we can compare it To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them (Isaiah 8:20).
The “sound” not a sound or any old sound. But a certain sound. Today there are many uncertain sounds (1 Corinthians 14:8). “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself for the battle.” Uncertain sounds coming from the Charismatic movement. The Faith movement The Methodist movement. The Trinity movement. The interfaith and ecumenical movement.
Do you know who you are listening too. Does their voice echo that of the prophets? Does their teaching reflect that of the apostles? Does their doctrine reflect that contained in the volume of the book?
Do we Just accept all preaching or should we make sure of the faith by which we govern our moral, physical and spiritual life. I indeed think so.
Seducing spirits work where there in no clear distinctive doctrine. Think of this, why are men deceived, maritally spiritually and doctrinally? It is that seducing spirits make them believe a lie! No man can even know he believes a lie until he is confronted by truth from God. Why are men seduced morally it is because the spirit of seduction works first in a mans values and doctrine or philosophy of life. The man who caves into receiving just any doctrine without examining its source will open himself to seduction at every level.
He cannot examine truth therefore he takes as truth everything he hears. Friends our ears have to tune into sound doctrine! I don’t know about you but I want to hear the sound from heaven that which the apostles heard (Acts 2:2). The sound that became their voice, their message, their doctrine. They preached Jesus among them in signs and wonders and mighty miracles, attested by the apostles doctrine (Acts 2:42). This is the certain sound.
1 Tim 4:16: “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
A man of God has to be able to save others, if his doctrine is unsound how can he even save himself! Is having a good meal important? So too is having sound doctrine. Sound doctrine is not only important, its commanded. A man without sound doctrine will be a castaway or a reprobate (2 Tim 3:8). A man without sound doctrine will deceive others and he himself be deceived. A man who teaches heresy brings upon himself, swift destruction (2 Peter 2:1 ).
Take heed unto sound doctrine. How do you know if its sound? Its Jesus doctrine, it’s his truth and its his way, because he himself is the truth and the way. Doctrine reveals him who he is and what he said about himself. Since he is truth then anything that said of him makes him less than God is a lie! If it points to Jesus as Lord and God, preach it! If it don’t, leave it! (John 2:22, 23. Acts 23:12).
